Skills Needed for Intermediate Team Skaters

The US Figure Skating requirement for this team is passed Pre-Juvenile MIF, however I am requiring a minimum of Juvenile MIF. Skaters who have passed the Intermediate MIF level or higher will have the best chance of making the team. Team skaters need good strong basic skating skills. They should be able to do forward stroking, F & B crossovers, cross strokes and power pulls with good posture, power and control. Skaters will need to know how to do the following turns:

  • Choctaws
  • rockers
  • counters
  • brackets
  • twizzles
  • double 3’s
  • 3 turns
  • Mohawks

Not all of these turns will be included in the tryouts. Currently the Intermediate team skaters are doing the following step sequences:

Circular:
  • RBO-LFI Choctaw
  • RFI bracket
  • pull change to a RBI rocker
  • LFI edge
  • RFI 1.5 twizzle
  • LBO 2X twizzle
Diagonal block:
  • 2 RBO-LFI Choctaws
  • RFI bracket
  • pull to a RBO rocker
  • pull change edge, into a RFI 1.5 twizzle
  • LBO 2X twizzle

Being able to do these step sequences will certainly put you a step up for tryouts.

Skaters also need to be able to do: all spirals with decent extension, a shoot-the-duck, possibly a back lunge, an Inside edge Bauer, and an outside spread eagle or at least be close to this. It will be a plus to have: a hydroblade, a good flying camel, a Biellmann spin, a strong combination spin with 2 changes of position and 1 change of foot, and a 135 degree grab foot spiral. Posture, presentation, and timing are very important and will be judged at tryouts.

If you intend to be a part of this team you need to plan to work very hard. This team is not meant for those who look to synchro just as a social activity. A good positive attitude is required. You must be willing to work very hard and not complain. This team will attend the Midwestern Championships in Plymouth, MI (Dearborn club) January 26-28 of 2012. They will also attend the Ann Arbor, MI competition in December of 2011. In addition they will attend approximately 5 other competitions. They will practice 4 hours on the ice and 1 hour off ice a week this summer. We skate as much as we can during the summer because more ice time is available to us. This allows us time to develop skating skills, learn program elements, and set our program. During the school year the team skates 3 hours on ice and 45 minutes off ice a week. We may be increasing this a little for next season. (Mondays 7:45-9 pm, Wednesdays 6:30-7:15 pm and Thursdays 4:15-5:15 on ice and 5:30-6:15 off ice). They also occasionally have some extra practices. This team works hard, but they also have a lot of fun together. Skaters must be under 18 years old as of 7-1-11. This is a team of 12-20 skaters.
