For over 60 years, RFSC has offered classes to skaters of all ability levels that are designed to improve and polish their figure skating skills. Our beginner level classes will give your skater a good start to a lifetime of skating fun. It is never too late to begin skating lessons. However, before the age of 4, a child will often lack the balance necessary for safe skating.
PRE-SCHOOL CLASSES . . .
are for children in kindergarten or younger.
Classes are 30 minutes long and include a 15-minute group lesson (4 - 8 skaters
per group). Parents are welcome to watch, but are not allowed on the ice during
the practice portion of the class. Class times: Monday 9:30 - 10:00 am, Wednesday 2:15 - 2:45 pm and
Saturday 10:15 - 10:45 am. (Class
times for Summer sessions are different than what is listed. Please consult the Summer registration
form for exact times)
JUNIOR CLUB . . .
is for skaters in first grade and up. Skaters are placed
in lesson groups according to are and ability level (10 - 12 skaters per
group). Each class includes a 15-minute lesson, a 15-minute workout and 15
minutes of practice time. Only skaters and instructors are allowed on the ice
during these classes. Class times: Tuesday 5:45 - 6:30 pm (Beginner to Basic 6), Wednesday 2:00 - 2:45 pm (Beginner to Basic 3), Thursday 6:00 - 6:45 pm (all levels), Friday 6:00 - 6:45 pm (all levels), Saturday 10:45 - 11:30 am (Beginner to Basic 6), and Saturday 11:45 - 12:30 am (Basic 7 and 8 only). Summer registration form for exact times)
ADVANCED JR. CLUB . . .
is designed for skaters who have passed Basic
Skills badge #8. It provides a transition between classes and freestyle
skating. Skaters must skate 2 days per week and we highly recommend 3
days/week. The class incorporates a 45-minute group lesson on one day (Saturday
11:45 am - 12:45 pm) and a semi-private lesson during freestyle level ice on the 2nd
day. When you are eligible for Advanced Jr. Club you should automatically
receive a separate registration form. If you have not done so or if you have
any questions, please contact Sabine
Tetzloff (RFSCJC@aol.com) at 252-8475.
ADULT CLASSES . . .
offer evening fun, exercise and relaxation for
beginning, intermediate and advanced level skaters. Skaters are grouped
according to ability level and receive a 15-minute group lesson within the
45-minute session. Class time: Tuesday 5:45 - 6:30 pm and Friday 6:00 - 6:45.
PRIVATE/SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS . . .
are available to you if you are
skating as least 2 days per week. If you are interested, contact Sabine Tetzloff (RFSCJC@aol.com) at
252-8475 and the lessons will be arranged within your class schedule. Please
keep in mind that at times, an instructor may be needed to teach a class and
your lesson may have to be canceled.
EQUIPMENT
A good pair of skates can make all the difference. Skates
should fit snugly with a small amount of room to grow. Skates are also sized by
width and when laced the laces should be about an inch and a half apart at the
ankle. Skates under a size 3 will run about the same as shoe size. Size 4 and
up will run a size to a size and a half smaller than shoe size. Skates should
be leather, not vinyl, and should provide good ankle support. New and used
skates are available at Blades to Ballet. Rental skates are available at the
Rec Center for $2.00 per class. Skaters at these levels should have a
sharpening grind on their blades called "combination". This grind
gives them more control and makes the specific moves required in figure skating
much easier. Skates can be sharpened with a combination grind at Blades to Ballet.
Clothing should be warm but not bulky or too tight. Skating dresses are fine
but not necessary. Gloves or mittens ARE necessary.
PRACTICE-PRACTICE-PRACTICE!
We cannot overemphasize the importance of
practice. That is why we provide 15 minutes of practice time during each class.
Practicing can be fun, rewarding and exciting. While it may not make you
"perfect", it will definitely make you a better skater!
