Current Group Lesson Schedules and Information For over 60 years, RFSC has offered classes to skaters of all ability levels that are designed to improve and polish their figure skating skills. Our beginner level classes will give your skater a good start to a lifetime of skating fun. It is never too late to begin skating lessons. However, before the age of 4, a child will often lack the balance necessary for safe skating. PRE-SCHOOL CLASSES . . .are for children in kindergarten or younger. Classes are 30 minutes long and include a 15-minute group lesson (4 - 8 skaters per group). Parents are welcome to watch, but are not allowed on the ice during the practice portion of the class. Class times: Monday 9:30 - 10:00 am, Wednesday 2:15 - 2:45 pm and Saturday 10:15 - 10:45 am. (Class times for Summer sessions are different than what is listed. Please consult the Summer registration form for exact times) JUNIOR CLUB . . .is for skaters in first grade and up. Skaters are placed in lesson groups according to age and ability level (10 - 12 skaters per group). Each class includes a 15-minute lesson, a 15-minute workout and 15 minutes of practice time. Only skaters and instructors are allowed on the ice during these classes. Class times: Tuesday 6:00 - 6:45 pm, Thursday 6:00 - 6:45 pm, Friday 6:00 - 6:45 pm (all levels) and Saturday 10:45 - 11:30 am. (Class times for Summer sessions are different than what is listed. Please consult the Summer registration form for exact times) Junior Program for Skating Excellence (JPSE)is a developmental program for children who have demonstrated a desire to skate more than one day a week and to accelerate through the badge system. The program is intended to provide both the skater and the parent with an “Introduction to Figure Skating,” taking skaters from the basic skills program into our figure skating program. Topics may include the following: Off-ice training, stroking & edges, spins, jumps, footwork, moves in the field, ice dance, synchronized skating, artistry, ice etiquette, testing, and conditioning. Skaters must commit to skating at least twice a week (either an additional day of JPSE, a day of Junior Club, or a private lesson) and must have completed at least Badge 4 in the Basic Skills program. Classes are offered on Mondays at 7pm and/or Saturdays at 12 noon. ADULT CLASSES . . .offer evening fun, exercise and relaxation for beginning, intermediate and advanced level skaters. Skaters are grouped according to ability level and receive a 30-minute group lesson and 15-minute practice time within the 45-minute session. Class time: Tuesday 6:00 - 6:45 pm and Friday 6:00 - 6:45. Introduction to Hockey Skating . . .Several times a year (usually during September and the Summer Sessions) we offer a class focusing on the specific skating skills required for beginning hockey players ages 3-12. These classes are directed by Paul Paprocki, Skating Director of the RFSC and a US Hockey Advanced Rated coach. Topics that may be included are forward and backwards skating, stops, and turns. Some stick handling and shooting skills may also be introduced. PRIVATE/SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS . . .are available to you if you are skating as least 2 days per week. If you are interested, contact Sabine Tetzloff ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) at 252-8475 and the lessons will be arranged within your class schedule. Please keep in mind that at times, an instructor may be needed to teach a class and your lesson may have to be canceled. EQUIPMENT . . .A good pair of skates can make all the difference. Skates should fit snugly with a small amount of room to grow. Skates are also sized by width and when laced the laces should be about an inch and a half apart at the ankle. Skates under a size 3 will run about the same as shoe size. Size 4 and up will run a size to a size and a half smaller than shoe size. Skates should be leather, not vinyl, and should provide good ankle support. New and used skates are available at Blades to Ballet. Rental skates are available at the Rec Center for $2.00 per class. Skaters at these levels should have a sharpening grind on their blades called "combination". This grind gives them more control and makes the specific moves required in figure skating much easier. Skates can be sharpened with a combination grind at Blades to Ballet. Clothing should be warm but not bulky or too tight. Skating dresses are fine but not necessary. Gloves or mittens ARE necessary. PRACTICE-PRACTICE-PRACTICE!We cannot overemphasize the importance of practice. That is why we provide 15 minutes of practice time during each class. Practicing can be fun, rewarding and exciting. While it may not make you "perfect", it will definitely make you a better skater!
