New Sign-in and Spectator Policies

Dear Parents,

We'd like to remind you that contracts for the 2007-2008 RFSC skating season are due on August 17, 2007. Please have your schedules reviewed and signed by your professional coach and returned to the office by this date to avoid late fees.

We would also like to update you on the two new skating polices which were introduced last year. The Sign-in and Spectator policies which were discussed at last year's parent meetings will be implemented with their consequences effective at the beginning of the fall contract September 4, 2007. Even in their initial informal state last year, the policies made a marked improvement in the club's skating sessions and bookkeeping

The policies are summarized below or can be reviewed in their entirety at the RFSC website (www.rochesterfsc.org) or in the club office. If you have questions regarding these policies, please contact an Ice and Rules committee member or a member of our Board of Directors.

This fall, we will begin enforcing the updated policy regarding skaters who neglect to sign in for ice sessions on RFSC ice. While signing in may seem insignificant to some, this paper trail is important to us as a club as we try to maintain fiscal responsibility. This benefits all of us as it will keep our costs down by making sure that each skater is charged fairly for their time on the ice. To facilitate tracking ice usage, the check-in sheet has been altered so that skaters will sign next to their names rather than simply checking it off. Skaters are to sign next to their name on the sign-in sheet before stepping on the ice, and are encouraged to sign in for all sessions that they will be skating as soon as they arrive. A skater whose name is not printed on the list must add their name to the list. Skaters are not to sign in for anyone except themselves. If a skater skates any portion of a session, they are to sign in and will be billed for the entire session. This is the only way to maintain equity with all skaters who have contracted for ice time. The policy applies to all skaters whether they are simply signing their name off on the preprinted list or adding their name to it. We realize that in the vast majority of cases, if not all cases, where a skater has not signed in it is not intentional. Rather the skater has simply forgotten and often times will be charged for the ice time anyway. However, certain circumstances could easily allow ice time to go unbilled. To maintain control of ice costs, which would directly affect you as a club member, we must make sure we are billing for all ice time skated. The policy establishes incremental penalties for those who do not sign in for ice time and will be monitored by Ice & Rules and club members designated by the board of directors.

Spectator Policy Copy of Policy
It is the goal of the Rochester Figure Skating Club to promote personal growth and excellence in an environment that is conducive to learning and free from unnecessary distractions. To that extent, we no longer allow people to observe skating sessions from the skaters' walkway area on the north rink or the hockey box on the south rink. This new policy was discussed at the parents' informational meetings last year and is included in the Expectations of Parents, Skaters and Coaches document that is signed as part of your contract.

As we explained in the meetings, people observing skating sessions from these areas often become distracting for skaters who have paid for an ice session. It also makes it more difficult for coaches to have private conversations with their skaters. Finally, when several observers gather in these areas, it becomes a fire hazard.

We realize that occasionally it will be necessary to be in these areas to speak with a coach or skater or even just to pass through. We ask that when this is necessary you leave the area as soon as possible. Consequences for continued disregard of the policy could include loss of skating privileges.

We realize that this policy must strike a balance between a parent's right to observe and skaters' and coaches' rights to work without distraction or interference. Sessions on the north ice may be observed from the skate changing area and upstairs in the glassed entry area at the west end of the rink. We are also pursuing alternative seating for this rink. Sessions on the south ice may be observed from the bleachers.

This policy will be monitored by coaches and club members designated by the board of directors. However, we are optimistic that the policy can be self enforced.

Sincerely,
Rochester Figure Skating Club
Ice & Rules Committee
